The beaches near the campsite
A camping holiday in Le Grau-du-Roi guarantees a relaxing stay by the sea for the whole family, with plenty of sunshine and fresh air. Our campsite offers a friendly, personal atmosphere and is close to the village centre. You can easily explore the surrounding area by bike and discover the many activities on offer at the beach.
Blue Flag
The seaside resort of Le Grau du Roi – Port Camargue has held the Blue Flag for many years. This important tourism label stands for exemplary environmental quality. For more information, visit the Blue Flag website. Le Grau du Roi has once again been awarded this prestigious label for 2024.
The Espiguette beach (1)
France's largest Mediterranean beach is located about 3 km from the campsite.
The beach stretches from Port Camargue in the east to the Espiguette lighthouse in the west, ending at the nudist beach. This 18-kilometre stretch of fine sandy desert is located within a protected natural landscape that is typical of the Camargue. This completely unspoilt landscape is free of houses, shops or roads. The site has been classified since 2014 and is recognised as one of the largest in France. This distinction acknowledges the richness and diversity of the Camargue's natural heritage. The Espiguette lighthouse is a listed building.
This 18-kilometre stretch of authentic desert is the ideal place for long, very pleasant horse rides. At the eastern end of the beach, the Pointe de l'Espiguette marks the end of a vast sandbank which is entirely cut off from the ‘mainland’, buildings and roads. However, there are some leisure facilities for visitors here, including pedal boats, deckchairs and a drinks and ice cream stand.
Please note that the 'Les Baronnets' car park is attended and subject to a charge from Easter to the end of September. We therefore recommend taking the bus from the campsite to the start of Espiguette beach during this period.
The Boucanet beach (2)
This beach is easier to reach from the town centre and leads to Grande Motte. Located east of Le Grau du Roi, it is characterised by a more urban landscape. Boucanet offers more traditional amenities, including beach facilities, restaurants and brasseries right on the waterfront, as well as volleyball courts and shops.
The marina (3)
This is the largest port in Europe. The port town is ideally located between the fishing port and the Espiguette nature reserve. Due to its popularity, we recommend visiting in the late afternoon or morning during the summer. The marina at Port Camargue is perfect for long walks along the quays. You can see beautiful sailing boats belonging to recreational skippers and regatta sailors there.
The port has 4,800 berths in total, including 2,240 in marinas, 2,560 public berths and 200 transit berths. T
he outer harbour has a depth of 4 metres, while the harbour basin has a depth of 3 metres.
The harbour master's office is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in summer.
Good to know
In Occitan, 'un Grau' means the natural opening created by the coastal strip between the sea and the ponds. This natural opening seems to have been created in the 13th century and connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Grau du Roi pond.
